Janine Look

Campus Pastor at City Impact Church Mt Wellington

Janine Look is one multi-talented woman! Campus Pastor of City Impact Church Mt Wellington with her husband Tim, she is also a worship leader and runs the City Impact Church Arts Academy. A qualified primary school teacher with a passion for photography, art, music, and dance, she has led youth groups, written courses and trained volunteers. She has danced with Youth for Christ and even represented New Zealand in gymnastics.

But Janine’s biggest passion is people – and empowering the next generation to grow into all that God has for them.

“When we invest into people, the tasks take care of themselves. When people know that we see them as valuable it activates something in their life. When they experience God’s calling, they realise – hey, I can do this.”

God Encounters

Janine grew up on the North Shore attending a local church, and it was there, at the age of 12, that she had her first encounter with God.

“I knew in that moment that God was real, and that I needed to get baptised and commit my life to Him.”

A few years later, Janine experienced God’s hand on her life again.

“I was in church and I felt God tell me I needed to raise my hands as I worshipped. It felt so awkward, but as I did it God touched me. I burst into tears. I knew that God was calling me to serve Him.”

Forever Changed

Janine’s parents moved to a Pentecostal Church and Janine followed soon after, getting involved in the church’s creative ministry as well as becoming a youth leader. Later, a friend invited her to City Impact Church.

“There are moments when you know your life has been forever changed and the day I arrived at City Impact Church was one of those moments! The overwhelming joy and peace of God’s presence was like nothing I’d ever experienced before.”

Reflecting on how she got to where she is today, Janine says she just kept doing what was in front of her.

“Right from the start, I felt compelled to be a part of what God was building at City Impact Church through the Senior Pastors, Peter and Bev Mortlock. Their vision and love for people inspired me to reach beyond my own shyness and to make the cause of Christ my highest priority.”

Starting off as an usher, she was soon asked to lead the team. Later she became a youth leader and then started the youth band where she met Tim.

“I offered to organise the band, and I arranged for Tim to lead the worship. He fell through so I had to do it! That was how I started off worship leading.”

Later, Peter Mortlock and his wife Bev asked Tim and Janine to join the staff team. They served as the Operations and Outreach Ministry leaders until Janine was asked take over the Worship Ministry.

Mt Wellington

In 2010, Tim led the team that went from the North Shore Church to start up City Impact Church Mt Wellington. He and Janine liked the idea of serving together but with Janine responsible for worship on the North Shore, they couldn’t see how this would work.

“I felt God telling me there would be a transition and at first I didn’t want to listen. I was so passionate about leading worship!”

Finally in 2016, the opportunity came for Janine to join Tim at Mt Wellington, and today they love ministering together with their three children alongside them.

“It’s amazing to see people’s lives being literally transformed by the love and power of Jesus.”

For Janine, life is all about trusting God no matter what.

“God spoke to me years ago from Proverbs 3:4-5 about trusting Him with all my heart and not relying on my own understanding. This was so applicable because I like to be in control and know where I’m going! God told me He was going to turn off the light so I would have to trust Him. That has totally been my journey.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
